Elementary Class - July 3/4

Parents,
your child learned about an important lesson this last weekend in the Elementary classroom, God is My Provider: I should Trust Him to Meet My Needs! The bible verse is the same this entire 8 week lesson so I'm hoping to see all the kids memorize this verse out of James 1:22!
The bible lesson was out of Exodus 17:1-7, where God provided for the Israelites in the desert when they left the slavery in Egypt.
In many of the weekend classes, the conversation revolved around Needs vs. Wants. What does it mean when we say, " Trust God to provided for my needs" but our friends have a cool new IPhone and I don't. How do we teach our kids the difference between Needs vs Wants when we life in a society with the following stats:
  • The average High school student owns at least 1 credit card
  • Average college grad will amass over $20,000 in debt for an bachelors degree
  • 75% of American households have multiple credit cards
  • Average American carries a credit card balance over $10,000
  • Average auto loan is $30,738, a 40% increase in last 10 years
  • Most auto loans are over 6 years in length
  • After payment of a 30 yr mortgage of $240,000 you will a have paid $580,000 for the house
  • Over a lifetime, the average American will pay over $600,000 in interest
  • On average, one American consumes as much energy(food) as
    6 Mexicans
    13 Chinese
    31 Indians
    128 Bangladeshis
    307 Tanzanians
    370 Ethiopians

We parents, have some difficult decisions to make if we want to teach our kids about Wants vs. Needs! The Family Devotional has 1 activity that talks about Needs vs. Wants. The other activity is about serving others and you will have a great opportunity on July 17th, Do Something...Now! Event. Stay tuned to this blog for information about family friendly events.

Enjoy some time with your family, Pastor Steve
