A Night in Bethlehem

This Christmas take your child to an interactive Nativity Story that they will never forget. Your Toddler, Preschooler or Kindergartner will experience the town of Bethlehem on the night Jesus was born. A Night in Bethlehem will not only excite your child but also provides a great opportunity to invite guests to experience the birth of Jesus like never before!

Bettendorf Campus GO! Kids has partnered with the Bettendorf School System and "adopted" Mark Twain Elementary School to supply food for kids that may be going hungry. Participating kids will be given a backpack once a month filled with nonperishable food to meet their nutritional needs when they do not have access to free breakfast and lunch at school, mainly during weekends and school breaks.
Currently, there are 50 kids that are participating in this program at Mark Twain Elementary School and Heritage Church Bettendorf Campus and GO! Kids are stepping up and helping these kids so they don't go hungry!

The following list of items are needed to fill these Backpacks:

HEALTHY CHILD WELLNESS POLICY and CLASSROOM RATIO POLICY

Wellness Policy
Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment for all our children (and our wonderful teachers!). Therefore, we cannot accept a child who is exhibiting the following symptoms:

A fever of more than 100 degrees F within the past 24 hours.
A persistent or heavy cough, green runny nose, sore throat (redness, white spots or an accompanying fever).
Stomach aches accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea.
A contagious rash or infection of any kind.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye).

Children on antibiotics should have been on the medication for at least 24 hours before coming to class to ensure they are no longer contagious.

Classroom Ratio Policy

Our number one priority in GO! Kids is the safety and security of your children and maintaining the appropriate ratio of adults to kids will help us keep things safe. With that in mind and for the safety of your child, we may at times close a classroom once we have reached the ratio of kids to adults for that classroom. We will do our best to not let this happen but we want you to be aware of the possibility and the reason behind it. We also want to remind you that, if that does happen, our Family Room is available for you to take advantage of. The following ratios for Adult:Child are posted at the entrance of each room.

Nursery 1:2 - 1 Adult to every 2 Children. We will always have a minimum of 2 adults in the nursery, thus with 2 adults the class can hold a maximum of 4 children.

Toddler 1:5 - 1 Adult to every 5 Children. We will always have a minimum of 2 adults in the nursery, thus with 2 adults the class can hold a maximum of 10 children.

PreK/Kindergarten 1:10 - 1 Adult to every 10 children.

Elementary 1:20 - 1 Adult to every 20 children

The old garage has gotten a new face lift, transformed into the Sunday classroom for our tween ministry, The Bridge. Pastor Miguel and Pastor Steve are partnering up with this ministry to 4th, 5th & 6th graders.
The new motif is a Graffiti design with a hint of Global Missions. During the year the students will not only learn about the Bible and how to live it out but also learn about Global Missions, learning about cultures, food, politics and religions from our mission fields.

This last Sunday, Heritage Church baptized 172 individuals at the Rock River. The sheer number is awe inspiring! I think a baptism is the most moving experience one can witness. And add the emotion of the mom or dad participating in the baptism is even more memorable. The parents are the primary influence in this child's life and I encourage parents to be apart of this ceremony. I encourage parents to also have a family celebration, like a "spiritual birthday". An email from one of the families,

"We went out for dinner to celebrate as a family... but most of all she enjoys sharing pictures and articles from her baptism to her summer class".

What an incredible testimony from a young disciple of Jesus!

I'm back in the game! For some reason I have not been able to blog for the last 4 weeks. I'm sure it was user error but I'm back ready for some blogging action!

GO! Kids Renovation 2.0

Parents, you will begin to see some construction down in the GO! Kids area starting in July. We have a few big projects to move classes and enhance the hallways and Destination Station. First up is the new Bridge Class for 4-6th graders. The Bridge class will be moving into the "garage". The space will be fully renovated in a global mission theme and decked out in all the cool stuff that any tweener will be excited to attend! The second project, we will split the Toddler room into 1 yr olds and 2 yr olds. The new 1 year old room will be moving into the old Bridge class (next to the current toddlers class). This class will be themed out into a Quad City motif, full of John Deere, Bridges, Mississippi mud, Bandits baseball, and High School fan memorabilia. All these moves are because Bettendorf GO! Kids continues to grow and prosper. Praise God and excuse the mess!

Baptism Weekend

This last weekend was one of those weekends that I will remember for a long time. The weekend was filled with smiles, fear, tears, joy, and a little bit of stress thrown in for good measure.
This last weekend we celebrated baptisms, the first act of obedience for a new Christ follower, and some powerful things happened at the Bettendorf campus. We had 7 scheduled baptisms but we baptized 13 people over the course of the weekend. We heard testimonies about rebellion, addiction, joy, freedom and love. We heard about how others influenced these people’s lives: parents, grandparents, and GO! Kid teachers. I held shaking hands as these people shared in front of their church family their personal testimonies of failures, their struggles, their fears but saw tears of joy in hundreds of people in the crowd as we heard of the power of God in their lives and their courage to follow Jesus. I witnessed, firsthand the glow of these faces as they rose from the water. I held the hand of parents as they helped baptize their child with tears running down their faces, a child that they have prayed for and modeled Christ in their own lives for years. I watched as three grown men baptized a young man they mentored and prayed with at many weekend Statik events, a young man that contemplated suicide until he found God and these men that sacrificed their time and energy at Statik. I personally was blessed by the opportunity to baptize my sister-in-law and my niece- these two were not scheduled and I found myself holding back tears as they stepped up the stairs of the baptismal. There was a common theme in each of these stories – people! People that sacrificed their time to invest in others, their own kids, in GO! Kids, in Statik, in small groups. People that stepped out of their comfort zone to share their life with someone else. This is what Christ’s Church is all about!

Elementary Class - March 19/20

Parents, the elementary class learned that Servant Leaders Work Hard to Help Others! The bible story was out of Genesis 39:2-6, 39:21-23, 41:37-57, where we read about Joseph working hard to help a lot of people. The bible verse Ecclesiastes 9:10a.

Not only did the kids learn that servant leaders work hard to help others, they actually helped others in class. This last weekend the Elementary class packet 50 backpacks with food for the BackPack Program.

Another opportunity you have, as a parent to model servant leadership is coming up in a few weeks, called Do Something Now! on April 13th at 8:30am. Family sign ups are located next to Destination Station (checkin area).

PreK/K Class - March 19/20

Parents, this last weekend, your child learned that Jesus Prayed. The bible story was out of Luke 11:1-4, where Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. Our fantastic PreK/K teachers (if you have not thanked these teachers lately, please do so next time you see them) talked about how to pray, that it's just talking to God, no fancy words or speeches necessary. They talked about when to pray. They talked about when Jesus prayed--when he was happy, when he was sad, when he praised and thanked God. Jesus prayed often, as we taught the kids to do also.

As parents, we have so many teaching moments during the day to really reinforce the importance of prayer, but like so many things as parents, we must model it. Some ideas to model prayer with your kids:

Before meals
Before bedtime
When you hear an ambulance or fire truck
Before a thunderstorm
Praying for family members that are sick
Praying for friends at school
Set a evening every week that the family comes together to pray

The list is endless but the important thing is, Just Do It, model it everyday!

Parents,

your toddler learned this last weekend that "Jesus Loves Me!". The bible story was out of Matthew 19:13-15, were Jesus rebukes his disciples for trying to keep the kids away from him. Take some time this week and read your toddler this story and talk to them about how much Jesus loves them and how much you love them, and while you are at it...tell your spouse how much you love them (your toddler needs to hear that also). This is all part of your families Faith Talk time, see the Family Devotional below for more ideas. I have included a coloring page for your child to help reinforce the lesson this week.

PreK/K Class - March 12/13

Parents, this last weekend your child learned about the lesson Jesus Teaches Me. The bible story came out of Matthew 5-7, where Jesus teaches about the Beatitudes, heart issues and the wise and foolish builders.

One of our goals my wife and I have set this year is to teach our son something new everyday. Somedays it may something small or other days it may be showing him how to spell his name. This morning, my son and I made french toast together. Of course cooking with a 5 year old takes patience. An egg landed on the floor (good for my dog as she always stays close when my son is cooking) and the egg mix was a little crunchy from all the egg shells that fell in the mixing pot. The point was not to outdo Julia Child but to teach my son something new and spend that all so important TIME with him.

the toddler class covered the story of Jesus' birth this last weekend. Your child was read the story out of Luke 1:26-2:20 of how an angel appeared to Mary and birth of Jesus.

Take some time this week and read your child this story out of Luke and review the Family Devotional that was sent home this last weekend (also inlcuded to the right).

I have included a picture of the Nativity scene for you to print out and have your child color after you talk about the birth of Jesus. The important thing is not how well you read or how well you tell a story, its about spending time with your child and reading the bible together as a family.

Take some time this week and share a past or current story of how you, as the parent serve others and how that may protect them from harm (physical or emotional harm). Review the Family Devotional that was sent home and quick your child on the bible verse.

PreK/K Class - March 5/6

Parents,
the PreK/K class talked about Jesus Learned Like Me, with the bible story out of Luke 2:41-52. As a parent reading this story, my first reaction is how the parents felt. You know that deep-in-the-gut feeling you have when you cant find your kid in the grocery store. The fear just grabs you, your mind starts racing, you want to ask the grocery stockers to stop stocking cans of creamed corn and run around with your searching for your 4 year old. That's the first thing I think about when I read this story. The second thing I think about is what we don't read in the bible about Jesus' childhood, his parents teaching him about God. His parents are Jewish, and the would have taught their child about God, remember what we read in studied in Deuteronomy 6. My point is this, the church is a supplement to the parents teaching. The parent is the primary educator of God for their kids!
Take some time this week and review this story, set a time every week (same day, same time, etc.) that you have family time. Use this time to read the bible, worship God, and pray.

the toddler class learned that "In the Beginning" God created everything. The teachers read your to ddler Genesis 1 and talked about all the cool stuff God created!

How can we teach children under three years old the truths of the bible? GO! Kids does it with short stories and simple truth statements. I encourage you to join us with these truth statements sprinkled throughout your conversations with your toddler. For example, when you see a beautiful flower, say something like, "God created that beautiful flower". The important thing is to repeat this simple truth statement throughout the day.

Take some time this week and read Genesis 1 again with your toddler and review the Family Devotional that you were given this last weekend (and included to the right). I have included a coloring page for you to print out to help reinforce the lesson.

Parents, the elementary class started a new 8-week lesson this called, Starlight Station.
The elementary class will board the only hotel and resort in orbit around the earth! During their stay, they will join Sprocket McCracken, the Director of Starlight Station, as he learns many ways to be a servant leader. They will also be a part of daily briefings which will walk them through the life of Joseph.

This last weeks lesson was titled, Servant Leaders are Careful about what they Say! and the bible story was out of Genesis 27:1-11, about Josoph's dream.

Take some time this week and review this story and the Family Devotional that was sent home.

Parents, the PreK/K classroom started a new 8 week lesson series this last weekend, called Dr. Tomorrow Robot Repair Shop. Dr. Tomorrow and his side kick Jerbo will spend the next 8 weeks teaching about Jesus, who was Jesus, what Jesus taught, what Jesus did, how Jesus prayed, why Jesus died and how we can tell people about Jesus.

This last weekend your child learned about how Jesus is God's Son and when John baptized Jesus in Matthew 3:13-17. Take some time this week and review this story in the bible and share with your child when you were baptized.

Take some time and review the Family Devotional that was sent home this last weekend, the two activities will help reinforce the lesson about Jesus (the son) and God (the father). Also, this week will take some time and pray for 5 people you can invite to church on Easter.

Parents, your toddler learned this last weekend that "We Love Jesus!". The bible story was out of Matthew 2:1-12, were we read about the wise men visiting baby Jesus.

One of the interesting parts of this story is the Wise Men trekking from the east,the first Start Trek! (Listen to a sermon by Pastor John a few weeks ago about these men) These men that traveled from far away came to worship the King of Israel, but what was the town of Bethlehem doing? The hometown of Jesus' birth. My point is this...what are you doing in your home to worship Jesus. Your toddler is watching, what legacy are you leaving behind, take a look at Proverbs 22:6.

Take some time this week to review the Family Devotional that was sent home last weekend (also attached to the right). I have also included a coloring page for your child to work during the week.

Parents, your child learned that It's important to tell others about Jesus and what He did for us. The bible teaching was out of Luke 3 and bible verse was Colossians 1:28a. The Family Devotional has some great activities for the family, The Testimony Time activity, I would recommend every Jesus follower to do.

Another important testimony is the way you life. As a parent, your children are watching what you do (and don't do), this is your living testimony, your lifestyle. I have a framed picture hanging in my office that my wife made me for my birthday a few years ago, that reminds me of this fact. It reads, "People may doubt what you say but they will always believe what you do!" It reminds me that I'm a missionary everywhere I go, the office, the grocery story, riding my bike to work and playing with my son.

Parents, the PreK/K class learned that "I can thank God for what I have" and the bible story was out of Luke 1:26-55, where Jesus' mother sings a song of praise to God.
What a great reminder, and difficult lesson to teach is such a culture of "privilege" we life in.

At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day
Some 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation
1.6 billion people — a quarter of humanity — live without electricity

These are all facts that are difficult for a 5 year old to understand but what they do understand is mom and dads lifestyle, they will learn what they believe from you, the parent.

Take some time this week and talk to your children about needs vs. wants, and the importance of being grateful for what we have. The Family Devotional that was sent home has 2 great activities that will help reinforce this lesson. P. Steve

How can you help your children face hard situations with courage? (Courage is the strength to face hard situations without fear.) I really can’t overstate how important it is to talk to your kids about your own struggles with hard situations. Hearing your story can actually be one way to give them courage. (If my dad was afraid on his first day of school and he made it, so can I!)

Family Activity:

Write the following situations on slips of paper (first day of school, spending the night away from home, a bad storm, facing a bully, getting lost from a parent, facing peer pressure, standing for what is right, or others you think of).
Let one person draw a slip of paper and read it aloud (or hand it to you so you can read it aloud). Ask the following questions:

How would you feel in this situation?
What could you do so you could face this situation with courage?

Continue letting each person pick a slip of paper and brainstorm ideas about what to do in each situation.

the Elementary class learned that we should not only follow God, but show others His way as well! The Bible story was out of Daniel 1:6-20, where Daniel and his friends did not eat the food that was given to him but only vegetables. The bible verse was from Proverbs 12:28. Take some time this week and review this passage with your child, you may even want to emphasis that David and his friends looked better after they ate their vegetables!

Parents, the elementary class learned that its important to Praise God during good and bad times. The bible study was out of Isaiah 25:1-12, and the bible verse to know is out of Psalm 47:6.

What a good lesson for all of us to be reminder of. I must confess, many times in my life I have praised God when He answers prayers but omit this when life gets busy or messy. This is a huge weakness of mine that I'm constantly working on. When difficult or challenging times come, my first response is too fix it my way.

Reviewing this lesson and preparing this review, reminded me of this weakness. Ironically, many times I think I (and the rest of the teachers in the elementary class) get just as much out of teaching the lesson than the kids do learning the lesson. That is a win-win opportunity and one of the side effects of being on GO! Kids team.

Take some time and review the Family Devotional this week with your child. Intentionally praise God in front of your child, this all apart of Faith Talk and God Sightings that are so important in your family time.

Parents,

your child learned that Jesus Took Their Punishment this last weekend and the bible study was out of Luke 23:26-Luke 24:7, the story of Jesus' death and resurrection.

This is the Gospel, the story of God's redemption. The entire bible, beginning with Genesis chapter 3 all the way to Revelation 22:21 is about this one theme. It was awhile in my journey with Jesus that I began to understand the full impact of Jesus Took My Punishment. I realized when Jesus was crucified He took all of God's wrath that was attended for me, my sins, my rebellion, my dirtiness, everything that deserved punishment He took. For the first time in history, the Trinity was separated, the Son was separated from the Father, because of me. This is why Jesus was asking that this "this cup be taken from me", the ensuing separation from and wrath of God.

Take some time this week and read these verses in Luke with your child, share with your child what God has done in your life, how Jesus has changed you. The Family Devotional has two activities that will help reinforce this lesson of Jesus Taking the Punishment.

A Shoe

My son is learning how to tie his own shoes (at least the shoes that don't have velcro) and it has been a challenge for my little five year old. He wants to do it but cant seem to grasp that over-around-loop concept. Many times he gets frustrated and quits.

Teaching your child something new is a great opportunity to bring in a God Sighting . As you are teaching your young child how to tie his/her shoes , tell them about your experience with that same skill. Tell them how difficult you thought it was when you first learned to tie your shoes or learned to read or ride a bike. Assure them they will learn to do it (and probably do it well) IF they keep trying and don't quite.

God is pleased when you endure - when you keep doing what you are suppose to keep doing.
Ask: What are some things you should keep doing? (praying, helping, sharing, loving others, etc.)

Parents,
your child learned about "I will Obey God!" and the bible lesson was out of the book of Jonah. The bible verse was Psalm 119:93.
The story of Jonah is every kids favorite; ships, whales, beaches, exotic travels-fun stuff. If I were Jonah, I'm sure I would have ran the other way just like he did. Nineveh was an enemy to Jonah, why would he want God to save those people? And then when Jonah went to Nineveh and preached, a great revival took place, the Ninevites repented. And then what does Jonah do? He gets all whiny and bitter because he loses his shade. Wow, really dude. But what gets me, is the last verse of this book, God asks a question for all of us to ponder, "Should I not be concerned about that great city?" And lets look again what God says about this great city, Jonah 1:2, "because its wickedness has come up before me". What is my Ninevah? Is it enemy's of US of A, is it someone else's lifestyle, is it ME?

Take some time this week and read this book to your son or daughter, talk about Jonah's disobediance, obediance and then bad attitidue. Take some time to review the Family Devotional and do the activities list.

the PreK/K class room learned about "I can trust God" and the bible story was out of Daniel 3, about those four guys with funny names put in the roaster. If we parents can only do one thing, I would pick this as the most important thing to teach our child, To Trust God.

Do your best to influence your children to trust Jesus. Tell stories of Jesus, share what Jesus has done for you, love and live the Gospel in your own life. Be sure your children see Jesus not as a bully who orders them to go to church and be good, but as One they can trust and Who calls them to everything that is good

Take some time and read this story to your child, share with them how you trust Jesus. The Family Devotional has two fun activities that can help reinforce this lesson of Trusting God.

this last weekend the elementary class learned "I will listen to God" and the bible story was from Jeremiah 36 where Jeremiah listened to God, even when others did not.

If someone was to list my strong points, I'm sure listening would be on the bottom, not only to people but also God. Some fellow men would call it a gender specific weakness but that is a lousy excuse. I'm ok will talking, telling God what I think and what would be best for my life but I rarely listen. Huge weakness and big mistake.

Take some time this week and read this chapter to your child, talk about the importance of listen. The Family devotional has some fun activities for the entire family and a great resource to go over during your family Faith Talks. Look for time for God Sightings during the day to help reinforce the lesson of listening to God.

the PreK/K class learned "I will help my friends do what is Right" and the bible story was out of 1 Samuel 26:5-11. This is story is about King Saul pursuing David and David and is lieutenant have a chance to kill King Saul. This is the second chance the David could have killed King Saul, so why not. It would have been game over, David would not have to run anymore, he would be appointed King. God had different plans and many times in my life God's plans are different than mine, which is a good thing.

Take some time this week and read this passage to your child and review the Family Devotional that was sent home this last weekend. Activity #1 is a good one. My son is in the process of going through all his toys to give away the ones he has out grown. Post Christmas is such a great time to do this, if your family is anything like mine, grandparents love to spoil grandkids. So their is an over abundance of new toys in the Meek household. Great time to do this and teach about giving.

GO! Kids Partnering with Mark Twain Elementary School

Bettendorf Campus GO! Kids has partnered with the Bettendorf School System and "adopted" Mark Twain Elementary School to supply food for kids that may be going hungry. Participating kids will be given a backpack once a month filled with nonperishable food to meet their nutritional needs when they do not have access to free breakfast and lunch at school, mainly during weekends and school breaks.
Currently, there are 30 kids that are participating in this program at Mark Twain Elementary School and Heritage Church Bettendorf Campus and GO! Kids are stepping up and helping these kids so they don't go hungry!

Nothing gets me more excited than parents modeling Christlike service to their kids. On April 16th more than 50 families participated in DO Something Now family events at the Bettendorf Camus.

Here is a list of all the cool things parents participated in with their kids…
• Flower Seed Packets – families attached Heritage Easter Invites to 60 flower seed packets to distribute to family, friends or just strangers they will see this week. Families also learned about what God says about planting the seed of Truth in our children. This teaching was presented by one of our PreK/K teachers, Mary Bauercamper. Children then had fun decorating their own flower pot, planting their own flower seed to take home and watch it grow into a beautiful flower. Parents can use this tool (flower pot) and the Family Devotional material that was given to reinforce the teaching for weeks to come.
• Manna Bags – families put together over 60 Manna Bags full of bottled water, food, soap, toothbrush/paste, and information about local Resource Centers to give to homeless individuals that the family may come across in their daily activities. A presentation on poverty and homelessness was presented by Teri Meek and Family Devotional information was given to parents to reinforce the teaching of Jesus Loving the us.
• Kids Against Hunger – an incredible presentation about local and global hunger issues was given by John Kessler, director of the local Kids Against Hunger .The families then assembled 1440 meals to be distributed to local and foreign children. 1440 meals in less than two hours! Think about how many children will benefit from these families that sacrificed their time and energy on Saturday, April 16th in Bettendorf Iowa! Thanks parents for modeling Christ to your kids!
• Chick Fil A- a group of families traveled to our local Chick Fil A restaurant and greeted patrons with smiles, delivered food to tables and cleaned off tables. What a great opportunity to partner with a local business to show the love of Christ. We are blessed to have such a Jesus Follower owning such a great business in town.
• Mark Twain Elementary School – for the last 4 months Heritage Church-Bettendorf Campus has been blessed by packing up healthy food for Mark Twain Elementary School for students that may not have food at home during the weekend. But on April 16th we were able to bless the staff with new painted walls and doors in their office and front entrance. This is what we want to continue to do at Mark Twain Elementary School…making an imprint in the lives of the student and the staff! Nice work families and our leader, Todd Burkhart .

Cabin Fever Family Pizza and Movie Night

What a great time at the Cabin Fever Family Pizza and Movie Night. We had over 60 parents and kids show up for pizza and a movie. Best of all, we collect enough food to stock 50 back packs for the Mark Twain Back Pack Program. These events are a great time for families to build relationship with each other, stay together as families and serve our community in some way. Don't Forget to save the date for our next event, DO Something Now, April 16th.

Its February and still a month away from official spring and it seems like winter has been going on for 8 months here in the Quad Cities. Its called Cabin Fever and according to the highly factual website, Wikipedia, its a real syndrome!

GO! Kids wants to help...its time to get out of the house and have some fun. Come and enjoy some yummy pizza and watch a movie with the family. Invite another family-grab an invite card at Destination Station!

GuyWire- An Hour to Start Your Day

Bettendorf Campus Dads--Are you needing some "dude time" to start the day off? Join me (Pastor Steve) for Guy-Wire (noun- 1. a tensioned cable designed to add stability to structures; 2. a rope or cable used to secure anything likely to shift its position).
I picked the name Guy-Wire, because it represents us guys trying to secure and stabilize our families. The question is what are we secured too? Jesus talks about this in Matthew 7. As quoted from the Message, "These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life ...they are foundational words, words to build a life on."

Thursday mornings, starting at 6:30 and ending at 7:30am, we'll meet on the "Landing" at the Bettendorf campus to encourage and learn from each other and God's Word.

Parents, Happy New Year!
The elementary class learned about "I will Have Peace when I'm afraid because God is with Me!" and the bible study was out of 2 Kings 6:8-23. One of the great verses out of the old testament is here in 2 Kings where the prophet Elisha responds to his servant, “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” What a great verse to remember when you or your family is going through a tough time, that God and his armies are stronger that anything that the enemy can muster. Now of course, we must obey God (see PreK/K lesson from this week on Obedience) and do his will.

Take some time this week and review this story and the Family devotional that was sent home this week. Its a new year and a great time to start Faith Talks with your family, intentional and scheduled times to talk about God and your faith to your family.

I Obey, Right Away!

Like all of us, we need to be reminded to obey. Buy some stickers (address labels, name tags, anything that can be written on) and write "I obeyed, right away!" on each one. When your children promptly obey, run to them and put a sticker on them. Smile and praise them.

Even though Jesus was God, He submitted to or obeyed His earthly parents and His heavenly Father.

Deuteronomy 6 was written thousands of years ago for a generation that was entering into unknown territory; much like a husband and wife entering into the unknown territory known as parenting. "Where do we begin?" is a question many new parents ask. Here are four suggestions to make Deuteronomy 6 come alive in your home.

You've got to start somewhere and the best place is with God—Life is messy and life is complicated - let God be the Hero. If we get our relationship with God right-a devotion to Him-the tidying up of the other places will begin to fall into place also.

Love your kids into the arms of Jesus—Do your best to influence your children to trust Jesus. Tell stories of Jesus, share what Jesus has done for you, love and live the Gospel in your own life. Be sure your children see Jesus not as a bully who orders them to go to church and be good, but as One they can trust and Who calls them to everything that is good.

Recognize that little things always matter—When you live consistently for God, you impact your family more than you know-especially in the little things. When your children are grown, your kids will tell you how one compliment you gave, one promise you kept, one sin you confessed made them respect you and proved to them that you really do walk with the Lord. Teaching moments happen all around us every day. Use them to impress the wonders of God upon your children. Make things of God part of everyday conversations.

Make your address God's address—Make the spiritual seem like the natural in your home. Practice the spiritual disciplines…read your bible, pray, tithe, share your testimony, serve others…and do so with as much joy as you can! Speak of God as a person-not just an idea-and expect to see Him at your table, through your tears and in the smiles of your kids.

Your family is a gift that you have been entrusted with to steward well. Look at parenting as your greatest opportunity in this life to honor the loving God who gave those precious children to you. They are your mission field!

Good Time for NEW Habits

Parents, This is a good time to start new habits. Teach your children to submit (another word for obey) to your family's rules by giving them a chart to mark their progress and make a habit.

For example: First, give them guidelines. Put toothpaste on the brush. Brush while you hum "Mary had a little lamb" or brush up and down, etc. Put your toothbrush in the holder. Then praise them when they do what they are told. Finally, put a sticker on a chart.

Ask:
What might happen if you don't obey and brush your teeth? What if you just pretended to do it every night? (Eventually, you would get cavities and your teeth would hurt, etc.)

Why is it important to obey Mom and Dad's rules? (They want what is best for me; they want to take care of me, etc.)

Learning to submit to or obey one's parents is the first step to obeying God. Actually, when you obey Mom and Dad you are obeying God.

Dueteronomy 6- A Parents Responsiblity

Hello and Merry Christmas from my family to yours. If you have missed any of the past online Deuteronomy 6 bible studies please click on the following weeks to go directly to that study (#1, #2, #3).

In Deuteronomy 6 verse 7, Moses uses the word Impress (NIV Translation) or Teach (NASB Translation). Teach is a word we use today but I really like the word impress. For me there is a visual representation of action…of something that is not easily forgotten. The point is that parenting is an action. It takes time, it takes sacrifice by you as the parent. Watch this video from a pastor as he emphasizes the role of the parent as the primary faith impresser.

Moses continues in verse 7 and my paraphrase is this, “ When you have dinner together, when you drive to school, when you get out of bed, and when you go to bed.” Moses is listing things that most families already do and it takes just a small, but intentional, tweak to impress God’s commands upon your children. In verse 20, Moses is preparing each parent for these times, “when your son (or daughter) asks…” Two things that will help you with this small tweak in your day-to-day lives: God Sightings and Faith Talks.

God Sightings can be big or small. Watching a baptism at church and talking about the meaning of baptism. Experiencing a sunrise or sunset together and talking about God’s unique and amazing “artwork”. Your child “catching” you in a personal prayer or bible study time. Forgiveness, laughter, a newborn baby…the list goes on and on. God Sightings are informal ways that give parents opportunities to model and speak God’s truths.

Faith Talks are intentional times set aside each week for conversation based on Scripture. For some, this may look like a family devotional around the table. For others, it may take place during a walk to the park or on a couch at Starbucks over a hot chocolate. The point is…planned, intentional time! Heritage church offers weekly family devotionals from PreK/K class all the way up to 12th grade Statik. Use these, use your own, it doesn’t matter, just commit to a Faith Talk with your kids once a week.

God Sightings and Faith Talks are great times to be real with your kids—to share what God has done in your life by making it personal and showing them that God can be trusted. God wants your children to know they are part of a wonderful story in which He is actively involved.

Elementary Class - Dec 18/19

Parents, the Elementary class started a new series this week called Spy Chase. Last weeks lesson was about, I Will Follow Only God! and the bible story was out of 1 Kings 18:20-39, about the story of Elijah and the Baal prophets.

Parents do you realize how big of an influence you have in your child's life? In the average kid's ministry, 40 hrs a year is spent with a child but you as a parent have 3000 hours to influence your child. Also, your child will look to you as a model of God's Truths. The point is this, your child will your emulate your relationship with God. If you want a faith that sticks in your child, you must model it at home.

Take some time this week and read this passage in 1 Kings. Talk about how Elijah stood up for what he believed God would do, in front of all those people. Maybe there was a time you had to stand up for what was right in God's eyes and the possibility of ridicule from others. Review the bible verse with your child and do some of the activities from the Family Devotional.

Parents, the PreK/K class started a new series called Kingdom Tales. During this 8-week series your child will learn about the Armor of God out of Ephesians 6:10-17. This weeks lesson was The Truth Helps Others and the bible story was out of 1 Samuel 20, where Jonathon helps David by telling him the truth.

Take some this week and read this passage to your child. Talk about friends in your life that have stood by you, through good times and bad. Talk about why you are friends, that trust is an instrumental part of friendships. Talk about how God has been trustworthy in your life. The Family Devotional sent home has two fun activities you can do with the entire family.

What you are doing during this time is called Faith Talk, intentional time set aside to talk about God.

Parents, your toddler learned this last weekend that "We Love Jesus!". The bible story was out of Matthew 2:1-12, were we read about the wise men visiting baby Jesus.

One of the interesting parts of this story is the Wise Men trekking from the east,the first Start Trek! (Listen to a sermon by Pastor John 2 weeks ago about these men) These men that traveled from far away came to worship the King of Israel, but what was the town of Bethlehem doing? The hometown of Jesus' birth. My point is this...what are you doing in your home to worship Jesus. Your toddler is watching, what legacy are you leaving behind, take a look at Proverbs 22:6.

Deuteronomy 6 - It's About the Heart

Welcome back to our third week of diving into Deuteronomy 6 to help us become better parents. The first week we talked about the author, audience and history behind Deuteronomy 6. Last week we talked about the Shema and about making God number ONE in your life. This week we are going to talk about something that transcends parenting—what separates true Jesus followers from mere religion. The only thing that separates a living faith from a ritualistic religion is one word, one idea, one compelling force…Love.

In verse 5, Moses tells this new generation something that Jesus would repeat and live out 1,500 years later, “Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Moses is fighting for something that is more important than lifestyle or practice. He is fighting for the heart.

This is relevant for us as parents. Many times we think the most important thing in parenting is to explain why the rules exist and get our kids to follow those rules. Don’t get me wrong, I feel it’s important to explain expectations and consequences to your child but this never carries more weight than a healthy relationship with your child. One of the most important things we parents need to learn is how to communicate in a style that values a relationship with our child.

One resource that my wife and I have used often is a book by Tedd Tripp, called Shepherding A Child’s Heart. I would recommend this book to any new parent. It trained us to speak to our son’s heart and not just react. I think this book is especially helpful for fathers. As a father, and as a man that just got done reading 1 Timothy 3:4, I have a tendency to walk into a situation a little too abrasive, thinking I must manage this situation with boldness.

Elementary Class - Dec 11/12

Parents, the elementary class learn about I Can Look Forward To Heaven Because Jesus Forgives Me! and studied the bible lesson out of John 14:1-3, John 19 & John 20. This entire class lesson was on the plan of salvation.

I want to encourage you, the parent, to take the lead as the primary faith influencer and to reinforce what was learned in this lesson. I want you to watch for certain signs indicating the work of the Holy Spirit in your child's life. Is your child asking faith questions? Have you observed authentic repentance in situation when thy have disobeyed? Do you see genuine conviction in their life?

It's always a good time to talk to your child about Jesus and his salvation but we also want to allow the Holy Spirit to draw them to Jesus. Continue to have faith talks with your child look for the above signs. The flyer that was sent home this last weekend is an easy way to walk through the Bible to sharing the plan of Salvation. If you did not get this flyer please send me an email and I will make sure to get you one this next weekend.

PreK/K Class - Dec 11/12

Parents,

this last weekend the PreK/K class learned that They will Tell Others About Jesus and the bible story was out of Luke 11:33, the Lamp. This verse is just part of a bigger story Jesus was telling a crowd of people that came to see miracles. If we read on we get the full picture Jesus is urging this crowd to learn and us today.

Jesus just casts out a demon and it attracts a crowd, people love to see Jesus working. Then Jesus lambastes the crowd for just coming to see him for the miracles, "to see the show" and not changing your life. Jesus talks about not repenting, not changing the way you think and act, allowing the world to influence you rather than Jesus.

Fathers, Men, please read vs. 34-36 and read it again tomorrow and the next day. Men, we need to protect our eyes, we live in a sexually charged society and there is nothing more the enemy would love to do than destroy our marriages. Men, I feel its important to meet with other men, to talk about our struggles and temptations. That is why we have multiple opportunities to get together:

Deuteronomy 6- Who's the Hero?

Welcome back and I hope you’ve had a great week. If you did not have the opportunity to listen to last week's sermon from Heritage Church please do that today. Not only was it spot on with what we are talking about in this online study but Pastor Kirk is one of the best young preachers I have ever heard. I feel that he is one of the best in the country and Heritage has the privilege to have him speak to us.

Last week we talked about the background of Deuteronomy 6 and today I want to talk about the first four verses of Deuteronomy 6. This chapter starts by reminding us of the Ten Commandments and this introduction will link with the Shema. The Shema, Hebrew for “To Listen,” are the passages in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. These passages are repeated daily in Judaism. The Shema is placed above their front doors; it is the cornerstone of their faith. What could you do in your home that would remind you and your children of your faith in Jesus? Post your comments below. (Remember, it’s a reminder, not an idol to be worshiped—an important distinction.) We will talk more about this when we get to verse 20.

Moses mentions something at the beginning of this chapter (v 2), in the middle (v 13) and at the end (v24)—the FEAR of the Lord. This is something us New Testament believers have a hard time thinking about, let alone teaching to our kids. But just because we have a hard time with it does not mean it isn’t important. Read through some of these passages:
Job 1:1
Psalm 2:11
Psalm 34:11
Proverbs 1:7
Proverbs 8:13
Revelation 14:7

One last thing, which I think Pastor Kirk drilled home pretty well, and Moses emphasizes it here…God is God. Sometimes as parents we forget that. We make the mistake of competing with God. Instead of pointing to Him we try to be the hero. I must be honest I’m so, so bad with that! There is a critical difference between being the main influence in my son’s life and trying to be everything to him. That should be freeing for many parents—let God be the Hero!

We are meeting this week on Wednesday because I'm out of town on Thursday morning. Please join us as we begin a new study of the book of James in the New Testament. Next up a a study called Sexual Detox.

What is Guywire? Guy-Wire (noun- 1. a tensioned cable designed to add stability to structures; 2. a rope or cable used to secure anything likely to shift its position). Us guys are trying to secure and stabilize our families. The question is what are we secured too? Jesus talks about this in Matthew 7. As quoted from the Message, "These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life ...they are foundational words, words to build a life on."
We meet every Thursdays, from 6:30- 7:30am, on the "Landing" at the Bettendorf campus to encourage and learn from each other and God's Word.

PreK/K Class - Dec 4/5

Parents, the Pre K/K class learned that they should Give their Best to God! and the bible story was out of Luke 21: 1-4, where Jesus tells a parable of the Talents.

Every weekend Heritage Church, Bettendorf campus is so blessed to have such an incredible GO!Kids Team of volunteers. These individuals sacrifice 1-2 services a month to train up disciples. Yes I said disciples, your kids, sons and daughters, are the next generation of Jesus Disciples that will lead His church like no other generation before them. That is my Dream!

Can you catch this vision? Are you willing to sacrifice 2-4 hrs a month to see a dream like this come true? The next generation is counting on you. Will you use your talents that Jesus has given you or will you bury them? Take a few minutes and review all the GO!Kids opportunities and email me where you can use your talents.

Toddlers Class - Dec 4/5

Parents, the toddler class learned that "In the Beginning" God created everything. The teachers read your toddler Genesis 1 and talked about all the cool stuff God created!

How can we teach children under three years old the truths of the bible? GO! Kids does it with short stories and simple truth statements. I encourage you to join us with these truth statements sprinkled throughout your conversations with your toddler. For example, when you see a beautiful flower, say something like, "God created that beautiful flower". The important thing is to repeat this simple truth statement throughout the day.

Take some time this week and read Genesis 1 again with your toddler and talk about God's creation throughout the week.

Parents, the elementary class learned I will Give My Best To God! and studied the bible story out of Mark 12:41-44 about the widow who gave out of her poverty. What a great lesson to review with your family during this Christmas season.

Deuteronomy 6 - Leaving a Legacy

Parents, welcome to an online bible study on Deuteronomy chapter 6. Please feel free to post comments or questions on this blog. Just click on the Comment link at the bottom of this post.
Before we begin, please spend some time asking God for Wisdom as you begin this study.

Alright, let’s dive in! It will be helpful if you read Deuteronomy 6 sometime this week and, most definitely, before next Wednesday.
Let’s take some time looking at the author, the location, and the audience.

The Author:
Moses was born a Hebrew but raised in Pharaoh’s home-the king of Egypt (Remember the floating down the river in a basket when Pharaoh’s daughter finds him story? – see Exodus 2:1-8). So we can gather that Moses was well educated. Being in the royal family he would have had the best teachers of the time. We are talking about an Ivy League education. During the time of Deuteronomy, Moses was a seasoned 120 year old leader who was leaving a legacy and giving a plan to guard the heritage of the Israelites and transfer their faith to the next generation.

The Location:
Deuteronomy locates Moses and the Israelites in the territory of Moab in the area where the Jordan flows into the Dead Sea. Unlike the book of Numbers, that chronicles the span of 39 years of wandering in the desert, Deuteronomy covers about a month at one location, on the Plains of Moab…current day West Bank and Jordan (image to the right).

Who is the Audience?
Moses is speaking to a new generation. A generation that did not witness the bondage of Egypt, the first Passover, receiving of the Law at Mt. Sinai, did not witness the wonders of God as the Israelites exited Egypt. That generation died in the desert, (see Deut 2:14-15) except for Joshua and Caleb.

What is the Purpose of Deuteronomy?
Deuteronomy, meaning “repetition of the law”
Moses addresses Israel’s new generation before turning leadership over to Joshua. His purpose was to challenge, encourage and instruct them about:

God’s powerful acts and promises,
their own covenant obligations of faith and obedience and
their need to reverence God and reserve their lives for his purposes.

Moses wanted to remind this generation of the awesome responsibility and privilege of loving and honoring God with all their heart, soul, and strength.
